Why did it take a country like the United States over 250 years in democracy before a Black could be voted in as president? Of all the races in the United States, how many have won presidential ticket on Republican and Social Democrat’s platform other than the Caucasian?
As liberal as the U.S claims to be why are certain elements (citizens) within resort to dastardly acts against the country or her citizens? A lot of the citizens may have been discontented with one thing or the other about the system but the fact that a certain group, set or descent never minded paying the supreme price in venting their disappointment holds a lot of implications.
To begin with, it is obvious that in spite of her credential of over a quarter of a century in democracy, not all her races or ethnic blocks are integrated.
Secondly, it reveals that democracy is not an end in itself, but a means to other things, and as such it must be opened to dynamism and retooling.
Thirdly, much as representative government is desirable by the substantial majority, the ways and manners of conducting it presently, are fraught with errors.
Fourthly, representation in government has been mis-directed long ago. Instead of representing needs, attention had been on geographical location or population.
To have a truly representative government in place, political party is not needed. Ordinarily, conventional wisdom demands that being the most populous nation on the earth, China would have the largest number of political parties.
A party is defined as a political organization whose members are united by the same ideas, aims, and can be voted for in election.
By its origin, design and orientation, party system predisposes to racial consciousness and inclination. It places high premium on external qualities of candidates and as such considers colour of skin, hair, and eye lashes. Others are height, tongue, the shape of the nose and background (descent) including the name and status of the school attended etcetera.
Is capability in skin or hair colour? Suffice to say no matter your crib or creed, colour or culture, height or strength, size or continent, the human heart speaks the same language.
Political parties express their beliefs in written document known as Manifesto. Of what use is manifesto when the needs of the people are known?
Professions or legitimate occupations, serve to reveal the areas of need in a country. All professions exist to meet needs and besides, interests of members of the society are brought together in the orbits of daily activities known as occupation.
Industries are complementary endowment to man just as needs –social, economic, psychological or physiological- are natural. Man deploys his innate abilities to function in industries and experiences fulfillment there from. To represent that industry at the highest point of decision making does not only strengthen him but bring about greater sense of accomplishment.
True and effective democracy should begin with bringing people together in such a way that none will be estranged directly and indirectly. This can be achieved by shifting focus away from what “divides us” to that which “unites us”- our needs. Our rallying point as humans is our occupation. The system of government which allows representation on the basis of profession or legitimate occupation is termed LIBERTOCRACY.
(more of this in the book: Libertocracy: Vision of the New Nigeria)
Each person belongs to the Assembly of his or her profession. The benefits are many and diverse. First it removes or replaces political party system and its shortcomings. Huge sum of money is no longer required in prosecuting electioneering candidature. Overbearing influence of moneybags and godfathers is eliminated.
Decisions in government would be richer, fluid and highly informed. Racial or ethnic identity and consciousness pale off as focus and emphasis shift to “what you do” from “where are you from”. It tackles corruption from the roots.
